For listening to the stories of others . . .
is a kind of water that breaks the fever of our isolation.

If we listen closely enough, we are soothed into remembering our common name.
– Mark Nepo

We call together a circle of people looking to deepen their relationship to “the ceremony”: a practice drawn from the tradition of the School of Lost Borders that EarthWays offers to our North Bay community. Together we will explore the basic elements of this ceremony – its “bare bones” – with two intentions in mind. Over the three days, we will call in self-healing for each person, and we also will explore how each of us might bring these different practices back into our daily lives.

The Practice of Council: Our starting place will be a day of sitting in council. There together, we will learn how to listen more deeply to the stories of others and, in so doing, how to listen more deeply to our ourselves. The last circle of this day will be an intention council in preparation for the following day.

Carrying an Intention into Nature: On the second day, soon after sunrise, people will be sent out onto the land to continue this practice of deep listening. This time we will invite people to carry a question, an intention, or some kind of inquiry, all while deeply listening for the mirroring wisdom of nature.

Stories & Mirroring: During the second evening and the morning of the third day, we’ll return to our circle for a storytelling council, sharing with each other the wisdom that nature has helped to reveal. We will also take turns mirroring back what we’ve heard from each other’s stories. Once again, this practice of mirroring – like council and time alone in nature – begins with deep listening.

For as Mark Nepo says:
If we listen closely enough,
we are soothed into remembering our common name.
