Ceremony focuses attention so that attention becomes intention. If you stand together and profess an intention before your community, it holds you accountable.

Robin Wall Kimmerer

The practice of council is based in our ancient, bone-deep connection to our ancestors who sat in circle around the fire sharing and passing down their stories. In council we build community…all voices are considered equal, and we hold each other in compassion and respect. We sit in circle so all can see one another. We slow down and practice deep listening with non-judgmental attention and fresh curiosity about diverse perspectives. We practice speaking from the heart with intention, in a way that purposefully contributes to the well-being of the circle. What emerges is the rich, combined wisdom of the entire group.

The practice of council is a powerful teaching in collaboration and respect. It is applied effectively in a variety of settings, both public and private: family meetings, support groups, civic meetings, agencies and corporations etc. Council is a potent guide for any group intention. The practice of council is a guiding force for EarthWays, in our programs as well as for our own gatherings that weave together personal connection, creative exploration, and plain old business. Periodically, we offer training in the Practice of Council and The Circle Way.
