The First of Two Barebones Programs in This Time of Transition
We drift through this gray, increasing nowhere
Until we stand before a threshold we know
We have to cross to come alive once more.
May we have the courage to take the step
Into the unknown that beckons us;
Trust that a richer life awaits us there . . .

An Open Letter to our EarthWays community,
Our collective is entering a year of great transition. One of our founders, Sara Harris, recently stepped down from being an active guide, taking on instead the position of “Guide Emeritus.” Two of our longstanding guides, Cynthia Morrow and Sahara Chaldean, have stepped back, each taking a year sabbatical to honor the rhythms of their own lives. And finally – so sad to say – our beloved guide-compatriot, Deborah Greene-Jacobi, recently died.
So much change, so much loss!
And so, when dreaming into a 2023 schedule, I’ve been holding this central question:
With these big absences, how best to serve our community?
What I began to imagine was inviting people to join me under “The Grandmother Tree” at Putnam Park, where EarthWays has been holding its own council meetings for many years. Then I wondered: If I were to handle enrollment, might I be able to entice Sara, Cynthia, and Sahara to join me for one of these gatherings? Sara still loves doing the actual circle work—not so much the organizational part—so she offered a hearty “yes.” Cynthia decided to start her year sabbatical in the fall and agreed to join me in late September to mark the end of this year off. Sahara has wisely declined, staying true to 2023 being a fallow year: a time of stillness and quiet.
And so, for this first of two Grandmother Tree offerings, please come and join Sara & me. (The second offering with Cynthia will come in September.)
You bring your own life theme and food to break your fast, and join us for a barebones ceremony. We’ll have an intention council in the morning, send you out onto the land for several hours, come together to break the short fast, and then finish with a story council.
Yours in service,
