This wonderful singer/songwriter uses fire as a metaphor for surviving a troubled relationship. We invite you to listen and turn this around: consider instead that the troubled relationship is a metaphor for walking through fire season.
Sonoma County has arrived at a “new normal”. Instead of the surprise of the occasional wildfire, we now have a “fire season” every fall. Or even worse, we had a fire season this past year that lasted from August to December.
With each fire season comes real fear. Fear of destruction. Fear of evacuation. Fear of loss of home. Fear of death. How to live with that much fear, that much uncertainty? For some, the answer is simple: move away. For those of us who choose to stay, what kind of clarity of mind, fortitude of spirit, and practical preparation are needed as we prepare to enter yet another fire season?
This ceremonial circle will be held in Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, where all of the park has been burned in recent years, either by the Nuns fire in 2017 or the Glass Fire in 2020. Even worse, half of it was burned by both fires. We’ll start the day in circle, inviting people to hear each other’s personal “fire story” in prep for a day on the land. During the solo time, we’ll invite everyone to go out alone in search of tree wisdom. We’ll encourage you to have two separate conversations: one with a living tree and one with a dead tree. What do trees have to teach us about living through fires? We’ll come back together in the afternoon to hear everyone’s story from this day of walking on a land that’s healing and growing.
